Armed youth, South Sudan army clash in Gbudue state
June 26, 2016 (YAMBIO) – A group of armed youth on Friday blocked the agriculture minister of South Sudan’s Gbudue state, moments after engaging the army in battles.
Minister Grace Datiro was unable to cross the road after the angry youth placed cut tree logs in Diabio village highway. The official had visited the area to access the farmers’ needs and discuss ways of boosting agriculture in the area.
Only 4% of South Sudan’s arable land is reportedly used for farming, yet agriculture forms the backbone of livelihoods in most rural households in the young nation.
The South Sudan army (SPLA) and a group of armed youth clashed on Friday Diabio, leaving dozens from wounded. It remains unclear as to what triggered the violence.
A state official, who preferred anonymity, said the army was sent to the area to boost security and protect civilians in the wake of Friday’s skirmishes in Rii-rangu payam.
