Abiehnom country official dismisses social media claims
June 28, 2016 (BENTIU) – The commissioner of Abiemhnom South County has dismissed social media claims that armed youth from neighbouring Mayom county in South Sudan’s the newly created Northern Liech state had clashed with area residents.
Social media was on Tuesday awash with reports on the unrest in Mayom, a county initially part of South Sudan’s oil-producing Unity state.
But commissioner, Moris Bol described as untrue the claims, blaming it on those trying to create tension among citizens.
“Actually, there is nothing like fighting here. Everything here is calm and circulating rumors on the social media were lies,” Bol told Sudan Tribune on phone.
He said the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) was firmly in control of the area and taking care of security.
Last month, a group of youth from Mayom criticized the creation of the 28 new states, saying the decision to curve away their ancestral land to Alor Dinka was unacceptable.
The commissioner of Mayom county, John Bol Mayak acknowledged the youth’s grievances, but said they reached an agreement with them to end these differences.
He also denied reports of fighting in the area, warning those engaged to social media to desist from spreading harmful propaganda.
