Spain calls on Sudanese opposition to sign the Roadmap Agreement
June 29, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – The government of Spain on Wednesday has called on the Sudanese opposition groups to sign the Roadmap Agreement, urging all parties to show commitment to the peace plan.
In a statement extended to Sudan Tribune on Wednesday, the Spanish Foreign Ministry urged the Sudanese opposition to sign the Roadmap Agreement for peace and dialogue brokered by the African Union.
Last March, the Sudanese government signed a framework agreement calling to stop war in Blue Nile, Darfur, and South Kordofan and to engage in the national dialogue process.
However, the opposition groups including Justice and Equality Movement, National Umma Party, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement /North , and Sudan Liberation Movement-Minni Minnawi refused to sign the roadmap.
The Sudanese government has received widespread international and regional support for the signing of the Roadmap. The UN chief, African Union chairperson, the United Kingdom and the United States have also urged the opposition groups to join the peace plan.
The statement also urged the Sudanese warring parties to continue the internal talks to reach a lasting peace agreement through the comprehensive national dialogue.
The internal dialogue conference was inaugurated in Khartoum on October 10th, 2015 amid large boycott from the major political and armed opposition.
Hold out opposition refuse to take part in the conference before the creation of a conducive environment and the implementation of specific confidence-building measures.
Madrid also welcomed the Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir’s recent declaration of a four-month ceasefire in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan, describing the decision as “step in the right direction” toward peace and national reconciliation.
South Kordofan and neighbouring Blue Nile state have been the scene of violent conflict between the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/North (SPLM-N) and Sudanese army since 2011.
