Last April, the Sudanese army said its forces captured the last rebel stronghold area of Srounq in Jebel Marra from the rebels of the Sudan Liberation Movement – Abdel Wahid (SLM-AW).

According to a press statement released by the state government, the governor moved to “Rokero” to oversee the rehabilitation process and the return of the displaced persons following the recent military operations aimed to put an end to the rebellion in Jebel Marra.

Also, this step aimed to prepare the ground for the resumption of economic activity, which has been suspended for 13 years due to the war.

The military confrontations have forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes and villages² in Jebel Marra.

In press statements on Friday, the governor criticized the rebellion saying there is no cause to justify the suffering that the people went through because of war.

“These were attempts to realize personal aspirations of Abel-Wahid al-Nur and his advisers.” he claimed.

He went further to say that the rebellion was “the main reason of tribal conflicts” in Darfur”, affirming that he would not leave the area unless he is assured about the progress of the recovery process and the resettlement of civilians in the three localities of Jebel Marra.

The governor added that he got acquainted with the work of the technical team in “Rokero”, the area where started the rebel group led Abel-Wahid al-Nur, saying that he directed to establish a rural hospital and rehabilitate the medical dispensaries in the area.

As provided in the statement, he further directed to count the orphans and widows to provide them with social support and back their economic projects.

He pointed out that he gave directives to provide al-Khalawi (schools of Islamic learning) with solar-powered lights.

Abdel-Hakam has ordered to build a dam, four water stations, and to repair 32 water pumps, besides the construction of a water station and a “hafeer” (rainwater catchment system) on the grazing routes to avoid conflicts between herdsmen and farmers.

He further pledged to remove any obstacles facing the education in the area so that the students of “Rokero” can excel over their peers in other parts of Sudan.

In several statements issued since last April, the SLM-AW rebels say they are still holding several position in Jebel Marra.
