Kenya backs UN resolutions on Darfur conflict

Mwai_Kibaki3.jpgNAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 29, 2004 (PANA) — Kenya supports the UN resolution demanding that the government in Sudan restore peace and tranquillity in Darfur, President Mwai Kibaki indicated during a meeting here with visiting US secretary of state for African Affairs, Constance Newman.

Kibaki said Kenya fully backs the UN call for Khartoum to take steps to improve security, human rights, humanitarian assistance and a to reach a political solution to the conflict.

In a communiqué issued by the Nairobi State House, both Kenya
and the US regretted that the violence in Darfur had adversely affected the peace process in southern Sudan.

Kibaki and Newman also discussed the situation in Somalia, with the Kenyan leader urging Washington to consider assisting the new government there.

Concerning the food situation in Kenya, Newman affirmed America’s
willingness to help.

She also encouraged President Kibaki to remain firm in his
crusade against corruption in Kenya.

The US, Newman said, would also like for money from the
Millennium Challenge Account to be used to address HIV/AIDS,
conflict resolution, the promotion of peace and stability, good
governance, environment and economic recovery.

She said the US considers the New Partnership for Africa’s
Development (NEPAD) pivotal to the strengthening of peace,
security and economic development in the continent.
