August 7, 2016 (NYALA) – A government committee in South Darfur state said that 17 people had died and 6 others injured by the floods that swept through large parts of the state.

According to the report issued by the committee tasked with assessing the damage caused by the floods and received by Sudan Tribune, 1515 houses have been completely destroyed while 2911 were partially destroyed by the floods in the localities of south and north Nyala, Al-Salam and Kateela.

The report pointed that 6 villages in the localities of Al-Salam and Kateela were destroyed by the floods forcing residents to leave; saying more than 179 cattle have perished.

Ali al-Tahir Abdel-Rahman, a chief from Kalma camp for internally displaced persons, 7 km. east of South Darfur capital Nyala told Sudan Tribune that the IDPs were the hardest hit by the floods, pointing that aid groups didn’t provide them with blankets or plastic sheets.

He warned against disastrous conditions among children and elderly people if the foreign and national aid groups don’t assist them immediately, saying that huge efforts must be made to protect IDPs lives and property.
