Sudan’s Bashir attends inauguration of Chadian president
August 8, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir on Monday has attended in N’Djamena the inauguration of the Chadian President Idriss Deby for a new term in office.
He won elections in 1996 and 2001, and after term limits were eliminated he won again in 2006, 2011, and 2016.
Director of political and information department at the Sudanese Presidency, Abdel-Malik al-Birair described his country’s relations with Chad as “deeply rooted”, praising Deby’s cooperation with Sudan in the various domains.
He said that al-Bashir’s participation in the inauguration ceremony of the Chadian president reflects the ties between the two peoples, pointing to the regional and international dimensions of the visit.
Al-Birair pointed to joint cooperation between Sudan and Chad in various fields particularly with regard to border security.
Sudan and Chad deployed Border-Control Force (BCF) along their common borders with the aim of curbing cross-border infiltration.
The deployment followed a normalisation agreement signed between the two sides in January 2010, ending a long history of mutual hostility in which both sides provided support to each other’s insurgents.
The Sudanese official further hailed Chad’s political and economic experience under Deby’s rule.
Al-Bashir was accompanied by the Minister of Presidency Fadl Abdalla, Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour, Minister of Education Suaad Abdel-Razig and the director of the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) Mohamed Atta.
Al-Bashir is sought by the International Criminal Court (ICC) since 2008 for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes he allegedly masterminded in Sudan’s western region of Darfur.
Chad, an ICC member, has received al-Bashir several times ignoring repeated calls by the tribunal to meet its obligation and arrest the Sudanese president.
