Flood affect 23,000 in Jonglei’s Twic East county

August 10, 2016 (BOR) – More than 23,000 people have been affected by floods in Twic East county of South Sudan’s Jonglei state, Commissioner Dau Akoi Jurkuch said.

According to the commissioner, several domestic animals were affected, amid fears of possible disease outbreaks.

“Animals are no getting proper pastures, cattle may be exposed to some diseases. Some animals are now limping, we don’t what type of disease, our animal health workers have not yet determined the type of this disease,” he said.

Akoi further said several people, whose homes were reportedly demolished or could be taken over by the floods, had relocated to safer areas. Eyewitnesses said these people moved to public places like schools and churches.

“Our staffs are now conducting an assessment to determine how many people had been affected and to which extend. Crops are also likely to be destroyed by water, especially the crops that were planted late in July. Some people had been displaced from their places and others had put around their home dykes to protect them from the flood”, the commissioner told Sudan Tribune Wednesday.

Meanwhile, roads between Twic East and Bor county have reportedly been washed away by floods, cutting off transport connection between the two counties.

“This has resulted into shortages of goods availability in Twic East county, said Akoi.

“People will soon lack goods to buy in the markets in Twic East, because there are no more goods reaching our places due to bad roads”, he added.
