Cholera cases reported in South Sudan’s Nimule town

September 1, 2016 (JUBA) – Local health officials have reported 11 cases of cholera for the first time in the South Sudanese town of Nimule which borders Uganda.

Four cases were registered among South Sudanese within the town and seven others among refugees fleeing violence to neighboring Uganda, according to Amoko Simon, Pageri County Health Director.

“Some of the patients came from Elegu [a Ugandan border town] and others are from here [Nimule],” said Amoko, confirming that laboratory analysis in Juba has confirmed cholera.

Other cases of cholera have been confirmed in various parts of the country including Juba, Duk in Jonglei state and Terekeka county in the newly created Terekeka state.

The new cases in Nimule are the first to be confirmed in southern parts of the country. Most of the patients are children and women.

Amoko said a special centre has been erected for cases of cholera in Nimule.
