September 10, 2016 (NYALA) – A police officer on Friday was killed in mysterious circumstances in Al-Jebel neighbourhood in South Darfur state capital, Nyala.

A relative of the victim by the name of Emad Haroun told Sudan Tribune that unidentified men killed the police officer on Friday night at an unknown location and threw his body at a Television Club before fleeing to an unknown destination.

He pointed out that the perpetrators smashed the victim’s head with a sharp object after robbing his mobile phone, saying his family filed charges under article (130) of the Criminal Code pertaining to premeditated murder.

Dozens of residence, who gathered at the Television Club before the police arrived in the crime scene, have condemned the heinous incident and demanded the police to arrest the culprits and bring them to immediate trial.

Nyala residents have recently expressed concern over the return of the lawlessness situation which prevailed in Nyala before imposing the emergency situation.

Following several looting and killing incidents last June, South Darfur state deployed large military reinforcements to enhance security and curb looting crimes in Nyala.

Since July 2014, the governor of South Darfur Adam Mahmoud Jar al-Nabi, declared an indefinite emergency situation in the state, including a curfew from 07:00 pm to 07:00 am (local time) in Nyala.

The decision also banned riding of motorcycles by more than one person, holding weapons while wearing civilian clothes, vehicles driving around without license plates, and wearing a kadamool (a turban which covers the face).
