Ghandour leads Sudan’s delegation to UN General Assembly meeting

September 13, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour will lead Sudan’s delegation to the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on 19 September, said the official news agency on Tuesday.

Last May, the Sudanese presidency said that President Omer al-Bashir who faces an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC) had applied for U.S. visa in order to attend the annual gathering in New York.

Also, in statements to SUNA, Ghandour said that he would fly on Wednesday evening to Venezuela to participate in 17th summit of the Non Alignment Movement which will wrap up its works on 18 September.

After what the Sudanese top diplomat would head to the UN headquarters where the 71th General Assembly will discuss large movements of refugees and migrants, with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach.

Ghandour further said that his programme include a visit to Washington where he would meet American officials for talks on bilateral ties.

Khartoum and Washington discuss since several years ways to normalize bilateral relations and the left of economic sanctions.

U.S. officials link this process with the resolution of armed conflicts in Sudan and humanitarian access to civilians in the conflict affected areas.

Washington supports the efforts of the African Union mediation team headed by the former south African President Thabo Mbeki for a holistic solution involving the political and armed opposition groups.
