Sudanese refugees in Chad need more support: minister
KHARTOUM, Sept 6, 2004 (Xinhua) — Chadian Minister of Public Security and Immigration Abderahman Moussa said here on Monday that the Darfur refugees in Chad need more services and support from the international community.
At a press statement, Moussa said that the international community is making efforts in improving the refugees’ situation in Chad but more work needs to be done.
Earlier in the day, the Chadian minister met Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir and explained Chad’s stance on the Darfur crisis.
He asserted the wish of Chad for the success of peace negotiations between the Sudanese government and the Darfur rebels in the Nigerian capital of Abuja.
The 18-month conflict in Darfur has rendered 1.2 million people displaced, according to UN figures.
Hundreds of thousands of refugees were taking shelters in neighboring Chad.
Sudan has expressed appreciation for the effort that Chad is exerting for realizing stability in the troubled region of Darfur.
