Darfur tribunal sentences two armed robbers to death by hanging
February 13, 2017 (EL-FASHER) – Darfur Special Criminal Court (DSCC) has sentenced to death by hanging two men on charges of armed robbery in East Darfur state capital, Ed-Daein.
In a press release on Monday, Darfur Special Persecutor, al-Fatih Tayfur, said the DSCC has recently ruled in two cases in Ed-Daein and South Darfur capital, Nyala.
He pointed that a DSCC court in Ed-Daein headed by Judge Naeel Ahmed Siddiq has sentenced two suspects to death by hanging after they were found guilty of armed robbery.
Tyfur pointed that a third suspect was acquitted, saying the court ordered to compensate the complainant.
According to the press release, a DSCC court in Nyala headed by Judge Abas Elwan has convicted a17-years old boy on charges of child molestation and sent him to the juvenile reformatory house in North Darfur capital, El-Fasher.
It is noteworthy that the DSCC in November and December of 2016 issued four rulings ranging from life imprisonment to the death penalty against convicts on charges of child rape.
Tayfur stressed that the DSCC would proceed on with its legal mandate to establish the values of justice.
Sudan’s western region of Darfur has been beset by violence since 2003 after rebels began an armed insurgency against Khartoum accusing the central government of supporting land grabbing by Arab tribes and neglecting development.
DSCC was established in 2005 after the International Criminal Court (ICC) decided to investigate war crimes committed in Darfur region.
However, Sudan refused to cooperate with the ICC, saying that local courts are able to examine the crimes committed since the eruption of Darfur conflict in 2003.
UN agencies estimate that over 300,000 people were killed in Darfur conflict since 2003 and over 2.5 million were displaced.
