KHARTOUM, Sep 7, 2004 (SUNA) — The Minister of Justice, Ali Mohammed Osman Yassin [photo], has directed the Advisory Council on Human Rights to follow up the case of the Sudanese nationals who were detained in Greece and returned to Sudan without any reasons.
The Rapporteur of the Advisory Council on Human Rights, Dr. Abdul-Moneim Osman Mohammed Taha, said in a statement to the Sudan News Agency that his department would prepare a complaint to the European Union (EU) showing the violation of the Greek authorities to their obligations under Article 9 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights that prevents detention of any human being without reasons besides their violation to the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights stipulated by the UN charters.
Taha added that the Advisory Council on Human Rights would file the complaint to the joint technical committee with the EU next week as part of the joint dialogue between Sudan and the EU.
He pointed out that if the Advisory Council on Human Rights did not receive what shows readiness of the Greek authorities to resolve the issue it would file a complaint to European Court of Justice in this regard. It is worth mentioning that 24 Sudanese nationals left for Athens to attend the Olympic Games after meeting all travel conditions, but they were detained by the Greek Authorities at the airport for a week, treated badly and returned to the country.
