Canada gives 770,000 US dollars for Darfur
OTTAWA, Sept 10 (AFP) — Canada said it was donating one million dollars (770,000 US) to United Nations efforts to pacify strife-torn Darfur in western Sudan.
“The funds, to be provided by the Canadian International Development Agency , will assist the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to extend its mission and to increase its capacity to investigate human rights abuses, bring these abuses to the attention of the relevant authorities, and thus help war-affected Darfuris,” said a statement.
“Canada remains deeply concerned by the ongoing violence in Darfur,” said Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew.
“We will continue to work with the international community, including UN Security Council members, to determine effective steps to pressure all parties, particularly the Government of Sudan, to resolve the crisis.”
