Sudan affirms keenness to achieve peace in the south, security in Darfur
KHARTOUM, Sep 23, 2004 (SUNA) — The First Vice-President, Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, has affirmed the government commitment to reach a lasting peace in south Sudan and to boost the security and stability in Darfur.
This came when the First Vice President received Thursday at the Council of Ministers the US special envoy for Sudan, Charles R. Snyder. The meeting has discussed the developments in Darfur and the role of the African Union for containing the crisis.
The meeting also reviewed means of realizing a lasting peace in south Sudan and resumption of the peace negotiations at Naivasha, Kenya.
The First Vice – President has discussed the conditions which prevailed following the recent failure of the negotiations between the government and Darfur rebels in Abuja, Nigeria, the Security Council resolution and the American stance and its impact on developments and the relations between Sudan and the United States.
They agreed on the importance of completing the peace process in south Sudan and prevalence of security and stability in Darfur states.
