Media Release JMM/JMC

The Joint Monitoring Mission (JMM)/ Joint Military Commission (JMC) has discussed the alleged presence of ‘Arab militia’/Janjaweed in the Nuba Mountains with both parties, the Government of Sudan (GoS) and the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement (SPLM), since Monday, 27 September 2004.

The allegations appear to have emanated from an internet site which accepts no responsibility for its articles. The article includes claims of approximate figures and areas where the ‘Arab militia’/Janjaweed are located.

Since Tuesday, 28 September JMM/JMC has been conducting reconnaissance of these areas, in order to find out whether the allegations are true. Using intense air and vehicle patrols and meetings with the local population, no evidence has yet been found of such presence. Patrols will continue.

As usual, JMM/JMC will report its findings to both parties.
