Sudan peace negotiations in Nairobi to end Saturday

NAIROBI, Oct 15, 2004 (Radio Oumduran) — Inter-Governmental Authority on Development has announced that the current of peace talks between First Vice-President of the Republic Ali Osman Mohamed Taha and Dr John Garang leader of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement will end tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the two sides will hold a press conference tomorrow in which they will announce the issues which they have been agreed upon and the outstanding ones. The technical committee will then continue discussing the outstanding issues after the departure of the leaders.

The peace talks have continued in the past ten days in an understanding atmosphere and negotiating seriously outstanding issues.

The First Vice-President of the Republic and the chairman of the SPLM held a closed-door meeting this morning.

Another meeting attended by three members from each side was also held today followed by a closed-door meeting held by the two leaders of the two negotiating delegations.

The meetings discussed the joint draft document, which was prepared by a joint technical committee from the two sides. It is expected that the two sides will reach an agreement that will determine the course of the negotiation process in future.
