SOUTH DIALOGUE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN NATIONAL DIALOGUE STEERING COMMITTEE

Leadership Office of the Co.Chair

THE SOUTH SUDAN NATIONAL DIALOGUE STEERING COMMITTEE:

PRESS STATEMENT. It is with deep regret and apology to delegates to the National Dialogue Conference and all the invited guests to our National Conference of the South Sudan National Dialogue that the Leadership and the Steering Committee wish to announce the postponement of the National Conference from 16h March 2020 to a date to be announced in due course. As is public knowledge, the announced date of our National Conference- 16th March, has now seriously conflicted with important national political activities that have made this postponement inevitable:

First, it was always the Steering Committee’s plan to invite the President of our Republic, General Salva Kiir Mayardit, to open our National Dialogue Conference. Now, however, the President has become very entangled with important state functions that cannot wait and which take his full attention and time:

The President is yet to complete the formation of the new government of the Revitalized Peace Agreement. This is a rather cumbersome process that involves the President in continuous long meetings with leaders of parties participating in the new government.

If he completes the formation of the new government, the President needs to appoint governors to the ten states of our country. That project too will take an unspecified time from the President to complete. What this type of work schedule means for our President, therefore, is that he will not find time to open our National Conference and spend that first day with us on 16 March.

In the circumstances, the Leadership of the National Dialogue and the Steering Committee have decided to postpone the National Conference to a date to be announced, when the appropriate time has been mutually agreed with our President of the Republic. On behalf of the National Dialogue Steering Committee, we wish to sincerely apologize to all the delegates to the National Conference of our South Sudan National Dialogue; to all the invited guests to our conference, especially those who had already made plans to travel to Juba, the venue of the conference. We particularly apologize to the few guests, who have already arrived Juba. As friends of the people of South Sudan and as supporters of South Sudan National Dialogue, we ask for your forgiveness and your indulgence.
