SLM-Minnawi evacuates Olympic site in Khartoum

March 14, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese Olympic Committee, on Sunday, retook over its headquarters in the capital, Khartoum, after its occupation by the fighters of the Sudan Liberation Movement – Minni Arko Minnawi (SLM-MM) without prior permission.

The movement’s forces arrived in the capital, Khartoum, two weeks ago, in coordination with the Sudanese army, but they were not received in a military barracks.

The Olympic Committee protested against the occupation of its site near the International Park in Khartoum and demanded the Sudanese government to vacate the site immediately, adding they damaged its equipment.

On Friday, the head of the Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan instructed to move Minawi’s forces outside the capital to a site in the Selait area in northern Khartoum state.

On Sunday, the Secretary-General of the Olympic Committee, Hossam Hisham, confirmed to the Sudan Tribune that the SLM-MM fighters are no longer in their headquarters.

“The committee received its headquarters from the SLM-MM forces,” he said.

He pointed out that the Movement’s forces repaired the surveillance cameras that had damaged during the occupation and the central control room intact.

He alluded that they may waive the lawsuit filed against the SLM-MM, but he stressed that no decision has been made yet.

Noreldaem Taha, SLM-MM Media-Secretary, confirmed to the official news agency that their combatants evacuated the Olympic site. He further called to “accept the others and to show solidarity with them to achieve the tasks of the transitional period”.
