5 SPLA-IO soldiers killed in S. Sudan Eastern Equatoria

March 23, 2021 (JUBA) – Five SPLA-IO soldiers were killed Mondy in an attack by unknown gunmen on their cantonment site in Eastern Equatoria State.

According to Lam Paul Gabriel, SPLA-IO Deputy Military Spokesperson, the attack took place in the morning hours on the SPLA-IO in the cantonment base of Lowereng in Kapoeta South and burned down.

“This surprised attack led to the loss of five SPLA-IO soldiers including the commander of the cantonment site, Gabriel said.

“The attackers are yet unknown,” he added.

The military spokesperson called upon the Joint Defence Board and the ceasefire monitoring body CTSAMVM to investigate the attack which “amounts to violations of the permanent ceasefire”.

Gabriel asserted the SPLA-IO’s commitment to the implementation of the security arrangements of the revitalized peace pact but underscored their right to self-defence.
