SLM-Minnawi says frustrated by slow peace implementation

April 4, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudan Liberation Movement of Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) expressed frustration over the limited progress in the implementation of the Juba peace agreement six months after its conclusion on 3 October 2020.

“Despite the signing of the Juba agreement since six months ago, the structures of the transitional government have not been completed,” said the SLM-MM Spokesman in a statement extended to the Sudan Tribune on Sunday.

Under the peace agreement, security arrangements should have started two months after the signing. Also, a conference on the federal system of government is supposed to take place within 6 months.

In a meeting held on 28 January, the Council of Transitional Government Partners agreed to appoint state governors on 15 February while the transitional legislative council and the commissions will be formed on 25 February.

But, discussions are still taking place between the Forces for Freedom and Change on the representation of each group in the transitional parliament.

The SLM-MM also voiced frustration over the implementations of the security arrangements.

“As for the security arrangements, there is a serious stalemate while we watch the reactivation of the former regime militias,” he added.

Several SRF leaders from the Darfur region called to launch the costly security arrangements process saying their troops are waiting in the cantonment sites in Darfur.

Recently, Sudan’s Defence Council ordered the SLM-MM troops to quit the capital. last February Minnawi brought some of its fighters to Khartoum saying their presence was part of the security arrangements.

The spokesman of the former rebel group rejected what he described as “a policy of extortion and instrumentalisation of the country’s crises for the benefit of partisanship”.

He stressed the SLM-MM’s adherence to the implementation of the peace agreement. He further called for dialogue to resolve outstanding issues and to stop “the state of negative polarization.”
