Al-Burhan meets tribal leaders over recent clashes
April 12, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The head of the Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan Monday met with the traditional leaders in West Darfur and urged them to end the inter-communal attacks.
Al Burhan arrived on Monday in the restive state of West Darfur to inspect the security situation and to encourage the tribal leaders to promote reconciliation and peaceful coexistence between the different ethnic groups.
Following his arrival, he held separate meetings with the Massalit and Arab tribes dignitaries to discuss the causes of the attacks and their position on the way forward to settle the dispute.
The Massalit tribal leader Tajeldin Mohamed Bahreldin, after the meeting, stated that al-Burhan requested to form five-member committees.
Dahreldin added they are “ready to abide by any decision” that al-Burhan makes since they “were not aggressors”.
For his party, Hamid Aldawai Dabuk the head of the Arab tribes’ delegation affirmed their commitment to support the state’s efforts to strengthen the foundations of peace and security in West Darfur.
Dabuk declared their readiness to fulfil their responsibility to achieve social peace in the state, adding that there “will be good news in the coming days”.
According to a local independent doctors group on Sunday, about 144 people were killed during the latest clashes between the two groups in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur during the first week of April.
The security situation in El Geneina is improving as no new clashes have been reported since 8 April after the massive deployment of military patrols in the town.
