W. Darfur security failure is caused by lack of cooperation between governor, military: al-Burhan
April 16, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The security failure in West Darfur State is caused by the slow implementation of decisions by the state governor and the lack of cooperation with the security services, said the head of the Sovereign Council on Friday.
This week, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan paid a two-day visit to West Darfur where he met with the local political, tribal, and social components and made important decisions to prevent the resumption of inter-communal violence in the state.
On 13 April 2021, Darfur Bar Association (DBA) said that State Governor Mohamed was absent from El-Geneina during al-Burhan’s visit because the latter did not coordinate his visit with him.
In an interview with Alhadath TV on Friday, the head of the Sovereign Council spokes about the slow intervention of the security forces to stop the tribal clashes between the Massalit and Arab tribes in West Darfur State.
He underscored that the state governor is also the head of the security forces in his state and that the transitional government in Khartoum does not interfere in his duties.
“There is a slowdown in implementing decisions and a lack of seriousness to implement it. Also, too much information are withheld from the security services preventing them from fulfilling their role,” he stressed without mentioning the governor.
“If the political authority (the governor) takes decisions and directs the security services to implement them, inevitably, this will be done. If the security services do not perform their duties, the matter will be referred to the military leadership, but we have never been informed of such move from any state of Sudan,” he stressed.
Following the tribal clashes of January 2021, the DBA, which Aldoma chaired before his appointment, issued a statement on 3 February saying some Darfurian dignitaries in Khartoum and leaders of the former rebel groups agreed to remove the governor. Following what a Sudanese official asked the governor to resign.
Aldoma who is a Massalit has been accused by his detractors of being a part of the inter-communal conflict in West Darfur State. But, his supporters have always defended his neutrality.
Hundreds of people were killed in the tribal violence in West Darfur State.
During his recent visit to the state capital El-Geneina, al-Burhan asked the Massalit and Arab tribal leaders to form two committees to work directly with the interior minister who supervises personally the implementation of al-Burhan’s decisions by the state security committee.
