South Sudan president appoints new military leadership
April 16, 2021 (JUBA) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appointed new military chiefs, said a statement issued by the presidency on Friday.
on 11 April, Kiir appointed Lt Gen Santino Deng Wol as the new chief of staff of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF).
Also, he removed the deputy minister of defence and the director-general of the security services.
In a presidential order released on Friday, Kiir appointed Lt Genl Thoi Chany Reat as the deputy chief of defence forces, replacing Chol Thon Balok whom the president appointed last week the deputy minister of defence.
Thoi is close to Vice President for Infrastructure Development Taban Deng Gai. He served in several military positions representing Gai’s faction his split from the main SPLM-IO led by First Vice-President Riek Machar Teny.
Lt Gen Door Monjur has been appointed as the inspector general of the army.
Other members of the new military leadership include Lt-Gen Riny Tueny Mabor as the assistant chief of defence forces for military intelligence, Lt-Gen James Koang Chuol retains his position as the assistant chief of defence forces for training, Lt Gen Malual Majok is appointed as the assistant chief of defence forces for administration and finance, Butrus Bol Bol as assistant chief of defence forces for operations, Lt-Gen Stephen Marshal becomes the assistant chief of defence forces of ground forces, Lt-Gen Ernest Dut Wol is the assistant chief defence forces for logistics and procurement, Lt-Gen Athayip Gatluak is appointed as the assistant chief of defence forces for the air force, Lt-Gen Thiik Achiek is the assistant chief of defence forces for Moral orientation and Lieutenant General Rubi Majuong as the assistant chief of defence forces for riverine.
