U.S. embassy condemns attack on aid workers in South Sudan

In a statement issued Wednesday, the embassy said criminals stormed the compound where humanitarian workers, including U.S. government implementing partners, and their families were located.

“Staff were threatened, robbed, and beaten, sustaining serious injuries,” partly reads the statement extended to Sudan Tribune.

“Such acts of violence are unacceptable and must stop”, it added.

The embassy urged authorities at all levels to ensure accountability by arresting those responsible and to guarantee the safety and security of humanitarian workers who are committed to helping the people of South Sudan.

“We also call on all South Sudanese to condemn those individuals who carried out this attack,” it stressed.

According to the statement, young people in South Sudan deserve better employment and economic opportunities, but violence and threats against humanitarian workers are likely to delay and interrupt the provision of life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable communities.

The U.S., however, said it remains fully committed to providing humanitarian assistance to the South Sudanese people, urging other donors and the South Sudan government to work with the international community to support the humanitarian response in South Sudan.
