Sudanese political forces voice support to government’s stance on GERD talks

May 6, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese political forces Thursday announced their support for Sudan’s negotiating position on the Renaissance Dam and called on their bases to support the government.

The ruling coalition of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) and Juba Peace Agreement (JPA) signatories held a meeting with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Irrigation to brief them about the recent development in the negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

After the end of the meeting, the political forces participating in the meeting issued a statement calling on their bases to support the government’s position on the GERD filling and operation. Also, they voiced their rejection of the Ethiopian claims on the Al-Fashaga border area.

“We renew and affirm our people’s confidence in the ability of their competent agencies and their negotiating team to protect the supreme interests of our country,” reads a statement released on Thursday after the meeting.

The participants affirmed the right of Ethiopia to exploit the waters of the Nile in accordance with international law on transboundary rivers without causing significant harm to the downstream countries.

However, “We reject the transformation of the GERD, which was built with bilateral support and cooperation, into an instrument of hegemony, and a political means for adjusting regional balances to achieve goals that go beyond the declared goals of the project,” they stressed.
