South Sudan’s Kiir in Uganda for Museveni’s inauguration

May 11, 2021 (KAMPALA) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir among the African heads of state in Uganda to witness the swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni.

Kiir arrived at Entebbe on Tuesday evening accompanied by Minister of Presidential Affairs, Barnaba Marial Benjamin and the minister of Foreign Affairs and Internal Cooperation, Beatrice Khamisa Wani.

The South Sudanese leader was received on arrival by Uganda’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Henry Oryem Okello ahead of the swearing-in ceremony due at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala on Wednesday.

Museveni, in power since 1986, was declared winner of the January polls with 58% of the votes cast. His closest rival, Robert Kyagulanyi got 35%.

Also in the country are Presidents Évariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi), Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Somalia), Emmerson Mnangagwa (Zimbabwe), Hage Gottfried Geingob (Namibia) and Alpha Conde (Guinea).

More than 4,000 heads of state and representatives of other governments are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Ugandan leader.
