Sudan, Egypt wrap up joint military drills

May 31, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – Units of the Sudanese and Egyptian armies on Monday wrapped up military drills dubbed “Nile Protectors” involving ground and air forces.

The joint manoeuvres began on May 26, in the Um Sayala area, northwest of Omdurman, to Unifying combat concepts and transferring experiences in fighting management.

The military drills were concluded by an exercise to protect borders and destroy the enemy’s capabilities, said the military media of the Sudan Armed Forces on Monday

The statement said the exercise involved the Sudanese airborne forces, the special forces, logistics forces, while the Egyptian army participated with the special and airborne forces.

The air forces of the two countries also participated in the drills.

The Sudanese army chief of staff, Lt Gen Mohamed Osman al-Hussein, and his Egyptian counterpart, Lt-Gen Mohamed Farid Hegazy, witnessed the end of the manoeuvres.

“The joint military exercises do not carry any messages to others as long as the two countries enjoy peace and stability,” said al-Hussein alluding to the current tensions with Ethiopia over the GERD and border dispute.

In statements to the Sudanese army newspaper the “Armed Forces”, al-Tayeb Khojaly, Director of the Training Department, said that (The Nile Protectors) is a joint exercise between the Sudanese and Egyptian forces, involving the air and ground forces.

“It aims to exchanging experiences, improving combat readiness, and strengthening cooperation between the two armies,” he said.

“The exercise has nothing to do with developments in eastern Sudan and is not directed against anyone, but rather a willingness to defend our country against any potential threat,” he stressed.
