Sudanese committees at peace talks in Kenya seek World Bank, IMF help
NAIROBI, Oct 25, 2004 (Al-Ra’y al-Amm) — Sudanese technical committees concerned with discussing mechanisms for implementing the agreement on wealth sharing has sought help from experts World Bank and IMF experts.
Meanwhile, the group concerned with running the negotiations led by Gen Lazarus Sumbeiywo met the two negotiating delegations, from the government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement.
The group listened to a detailed report on the work of the three committees in the last few days.
The group heard that the committees have agreed on many issues which require mechanisms for implementation of the agreements, except two issues which are the issue of citizens’ participation in management of oil affairs and compensation of those who were displaced as result of oil exploration and extraction.
The committee concerned with the agreement on sharing of wealth discussed with IMF officials issues related to the financial system and the oil sector, as well as how to coordinate for establishment of a unified financial policy in light of the Islamic system and the traditional one, and therefore the need to reform the central bank.
The agreement on wealth sharing between the Sudanese government and the SPLM, covers the division of oil and non-oil revenues, the management of the oil sector, the monetary authority and the reconstruction of the South and other war-affected areas during the Pre-Interim and Interim Period.
