African Fund supports restructuring of education system in Eritrea

Nov 13, 2004 (LiquidAfrica) — The Education system in Eritrea will benefit from the support of the African Development Fund (ADF) following the approval of a loan and a grant by its Board of Directors to finance the country’s Education sector Development Programme.

The loan of 13.6 million Units of Account (UA*), equivalent to 20.38 million US dollars, and the grant of 5.03 million UA, equivalent to 7.53 million US dollars is destined to strengthen human capacity building through the provision of quality education.

The project comprises three main components:

Improving Access to Quality Basic Education q Improving Access to Quality Secondary Education q Building Capacity for the Education System

The project will involve the construction of 349 new classrooms at about 60 schools for elementary and middle level, and for special needs education

It will improve quality at the secondary level by establishing and equipping 30 science laboratories and 40 workshops at a total of 30 schools and by providing 20 computer laboratories and 400 sets of computers to 20 schools. Reference and library books and teaching aids will be provided for 50 schools. To enhance the quality

The project will be jointly financed by the ADF and the government of Eritrea. The ADF loan and grant will finance 91.4% of the total cost of the project while the government finances the remaining 8.6%

Bank Group operations in Eritrea started in 1996. To date, the Group has committed a total of about US $ 77.91 million on 8 operations.
