Government to rehabilitate Toker Delta scheme in the Eastern Sudan

KHARTOUM, Nov 14, 2004 (SUNA) — The Minister of Finance and Chairman of the Committee for Development of the Red Sea State, Al-Zubair Ahmed Al-Hassan, announced that the government has assigned 1.1 billion dinars for rehabilitation of Toker Delta Scheme.

In a press statement, Al-Hassan said that the Ministry of Agriculture has worked out studies to rehabilitate water dams and canals at Toker Delta Scheme. He referred to a trend to utilize modern technology at the scheme.

Toker Delta scheme is the major agricultural project in the Red Sea State.

It is to be recalled that the Committee for Development of the Red Sea was set up by the President of the Republic.

Two rebel groups in Eastern Sudan, called, the Beja Congress and the Free Lions Movement, share many of the same grievances of Darfur rebels, accusing Khartoum of neglecting the impoverished area.

Sudanese government charges since last July Eritrea of backing Darfur rebels and Eastern Sudan rebels to launch military activities against Khartoum, in this region.]
