UN, AU should impose sanctions on Sudan, says daily

KAMPALA, Uganda, Nov 17, 2004 (PANA) — The UN Security Council should impose an
immediate arms embargo on the Sudan just like it did against
Ivory Coast, says the official New Vision here Wednesday.

The UN resolution to impose an arms on Ivory Coast was sponsored
by France, whose peacekeeping troops were attacked and killed
recently. The African Union supported the move after its
fruitless gathering in Nigeria last week.

In an editorial, “Ivory Coast OK — Now Darfur,” the paper says
“the swiftness with which the sanctions have come is very
impressive, and should go a long way in stemming the complete
break up of the country.”

While it is well and good that Ivory Coast has been sorted out so
expeditiously, the paper urges the UN and the AU to use similar
urgency in tackling Africa’s other big problem, the Sudanese
province of Darfur.

“After all, the human suffering there is even greater —
thousands have died, and millions are displaced,” the paper says.

“Without necessarily detracting from Ivory Coast, Darfur should
also be given the due attention it deserves,” the New Vision
adds.
