UN’s Annan to address Security Council meeting in Nairobi on Sudan
UNITED NATIONS, Nov 17, 2004 (KUNA) — Secretary-General Kofi Annan is leaving New York on Wednesday to address a Security Council meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, on Thursday and Friday on the situation in the Sudan and the region, his spokesman said.
The Council’s meeting is expected to focus on the civil conflicts engulfing the Sudan, including the crisis in the Darfur region, as well as the long-running civil war in the southern part of the country.
The meeting in Nairobi will be the fourth in the Council’s history to be held outside New York, according to US officials whose country currently preside over the body.
The Council adopted a number of resolutions during the past few months threatening Khartoum with oil and over sanctions if it does not commit itself to end the chaos in Darfur.
