DUP, SPLM commemorate the 16th anniversary of the Sudanese Peace Agreement

Press Release

November 16, 2004

The commemoration recalled “the strong denouncement of the two parties to the path of war, their deep belief in the optional unity of the country, and their irrevocable rejection of the destructive policies that aimed to escalate civil war by abuses of religion and ethnic hostilities.”

The Peace Agreement “provided for a comprehensive solution to the country’s major issues and opened the door for a national dialogue between political parties of the country as a prerequisite for the transparent and highly responsible peace negotiations.”

The two parties pledged “to work hand in hand to bring about full coordination between the peace negotiations of Nairobi, Abuja, and Cairo to enhance the national consensus and the participation of all political forces in the achievement of the comprehensive and permanent peace of Sudan.”

The Communiqué affirmed the DUP/SPLM strategic alliance, based on the Sudanese Peace Agreement 1988, “which has been a faithful guard for the hopes of the People of Sudan to realize the full enjoyment of the just and permanent peace as well as the regular democracy and the optional unity.” Determined to work for the achievement of democracy and peace, the two parties promised “to maintain the unity of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)” and called on the country’s Friends and sisterly States “to support the Sudanese efforts for peace.”
