UAE to extradite Sudanese opposition figure

DUBAI, Nov 22 (AFP) — The United Arab Emirates is to extradite Sudanese opposition military leader Abdel Aziz Khaled who is wanted by Interpol on charges of terrorism, an Emirati official said Monday.

“Abdel Aziz Khaled will be handed over to the Sudanese authorities in accordance with a decision by the public prosecutor of the United Arab Emirates,” the source told AFP.

Khaled is head of the Sudanese Alliance Forces, one of the military elements of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), a group that has been working since 1995 to overthrow the regime of President Omar al-Beshir.

Khaled was arrested in September at Abu Dhabi airport and turned over to the state prosecutor.

He arrived in the UAE capital from Cairo, where he had been living since his expulsion a month earlier from Eritrea, where his forces operate along the border with Sudan.

Al-Jazeera television said he would probably be turned over to Interpol in Damascus for eventual transfer to the custody of the Sudanese.
