Ethiopian raiders kill police officer, abduct two civilians in Kenya
NAIROBI, Nov 24 (AFP) — An armed gang from Ethiopia this week raided a village in northern Kenya, killing a police officer and abducting two people, police said on Wednesday.
“Armed men from Ethiopia attacked a manyatta (village) in northern Kenya late on Monday, shot dead a police officer and abducted two civilians, including a government official,” the police chief of Kenya’s Eastern Province, Thomas Chigamba, told AFP.
One of the attackers, dressed in Ethiopian military uniform, surrendered to police and was being questioned, Chigamba added.
He said that talks between Kenyan and Ethiopian officials were under way in the border town of Moyale to secure the release of the abducted men.
He added that Kenyan paramilitary police officers had been deployed in the area to reinforce security.
In July, heavily-armed attackers believed to be from Ethiopia’s Merrile tribe ambushed and killed four fishermen and two Kenyan paramilitary police near the country’s northwestern Lake Turkana.
