Eritrean president in Yemen after visiting Qatar

ASMARA, Dec 8 (AFP) — Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki arrived in Yemen on Wednesday for an official visit following a stop in Qatar, Eritrean officials said.

In Qatar, talks focused on Qatari investments in Eritrea, while in Yemen, the Eritrean president was to discuss political, economic and security issues, the Eritrean information ministry said in a statement.

“It was a working visit at the invitations of Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamid Bin Khelifa Al-Sani and Yemeni President Ali-Seid Ali Abdella Saleh,” the statement said.

A dispute between Eritrea and Yemen over the strategic Hanish islands in the Red Sea erupted into an armed conflict in December 1995, but Sanaa and Asmara ended the dispute after a decision by the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
