Sudan faces problems in transporting cereals

KHARTOUM, Sudan, Dec 18, 2004 (PANA) — Sudan has been facing logistical
problems in transporting cereals from production areas to
consumers, the ministry of agriculture announced here Friday.

“This agricultural season has yielded 2.5 million tonnes of
cereals in the irrigated sector excluding the rain-fed schemes,
while the overall demand does not exceed 5 million tonnes
annually,” the minister of state for agriculture, Al Fatih
Mohamed Saed, told a press conference in Khartoum.

The official said he expects high harvests in the rain-fed cereal
growing areas of Gedarif, Blue Nile, Sinnar, Upper Nile and South
Kordufan.

He attributed the high harvest to the utilisation of technical
packages by farmers.
