Unidentified rebel group kill 5 in west Sudan
KHARTOUM, Sudan, Dec 27, 2004 (UPI) — Five people, including two policemen, were killed in an attack by unidentified rebels in the town of Gabish which is adjacent to Darfur, western Sudan.
The Sudanese News Agency, SUNA, quoted Abdel Wahed Youssef, a local official, as saying gunmen traveling in 10 four-wheel drive vehicles and big trucks entered the town Monday morning and attacked government buildings including the police station, the tribunal and service centers.
“The limited police force in the town confronted the attackers who opened fire extensively at the buildings and set many installations on fire,” Youssef said.
At least two policemen and three civilians were killed in the armed confrontations.
The official did not accuse any particular rebel group, but said the incident was in violation of an agreement signed between the government and Darfur rebels.
