Ugandan rebels kill one in southern Sudan
KAMPALA, Dec 27, 2004 (Xinhua) — The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels have killed one person and captured two others in southern Sudan, local press The New Vision reported on Monday.
The Ugandan army’s 4th division chief Nathan Mugisha was quoted by the state-owned newspaper as saying that the attack took place last week at a Sudanese People’s Liberation Army camp in southern Sudan.
Mugisha said the rebels were under the command of Opiro Anaka, adding that the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) mobile troops recovered two guns and 30 bullets.
Mugisha also said another group of rebels attempted to infiltrate Koch-Goma camp in Gulu district in northern Uganda but the UPDF killed three of them and recovered two rifles.
He added that one rebel was captured with his gun during the attempted attack.
On Sunday, the Ugandan army killed 21 LRA rebels and captured six others in Gulu district.
The LRA rebels, based in southern Sudan, have killed tens of thousands of civilians, abducted over 20,000 children for fighters, porters and sex slaves, and displaced over 1.6 million people in their 18-year rebellion in northern Uganda.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni declared a ceasefire with the rebels beginning from Nov. 15 for peace talks between the government and the rebels. The ceasefire was extended for three time until Dec. 31.
