Final Sudan peace deal to be signed on January 9: mediators

NAIROBI, Dec 30 (AFP) — A final Sudanese peace agreement will be signed in the Kenyan capital on January 9, mediators and the main southern rebel group said on Thursday.

yasir_arman.jpg“A final peace agreement will be signed in Nairobi on January 9,” an official in the mediation told AFP by telephone from the talks’ venue in Kenya’s northwestern town of Naivasha.

Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) spokesman Yasser Arman confirmed January 9 for as the date for “formal celebrations in the Kenyan capital, where we will sign a comprehensive document, consisting of all the protocols and annexes.”

On Friday, both sides will sign an agreement on a permanent ceasefire and details on how the final deal would be implemented, after it is signed.

African Union and the Khartoum government had earlier announced that the signing would be on January 10.
