Remains of 137 Ethiopians killed by former regime re-buried in northwest

ADDIS ABABA, Jan 3, 2004 (Radio Ethiopia) — Remains of 135 people killed and thrown in a bush in Gonder, in northwestern Ethiopia, town during the Red Terror campaign by the Dergue former military regime have been given a decent re-burial.

According to the representative of [name indistinct] Project at the federal prosecutor’s bureau, Mr Nega Getnet, the people were killed without trials after being picked from their houses and prisons for allegedly being members of the EPRP (Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party), and supporters of the TPLF [Tigray People’s Liberation Front].

He said the federal special prosecutor decided that the remains be given a decent religious re-burial at the Kaha Yesus Church. He added that apart from making the culprits face the law, the government was discharging its obligations of safeguarding the dignity of innocent citizens.
