Garang thanks Kadhafi for backing Sudanese peace

gaddaffi.jpgTRIPOLI, Libya, Jan 7, 2004 (PANA) — John Garang, the head of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has thanked the Libyan leader, Colonel Moammar Kadhafi, for his solidarity and active and determinant actions that enabled parties in the southern civil war to reach a global final peace agreement after more than two decades of civil war.

“We are pleased to inform you that we have reached a global and final
peace agreement with the Sudanese government after a rude long war and
negotiations. You were the closest among our neighbours to support the
aspirations of ur people for justice, freedom and the construction of a
new Sudan,” Garang said in a message to Kadhafi.

This solidarity and active involvement of the Libyan leader had an important impact on the results obtained, he added.

The SPLM leader said that he will keep the Libyan leader’s attitude in his memory, adding that “the history and struggle of our people” will remain in the annals of the Libyan Jamahiriya.

On 31 December 2004, the Sudanese government and the SPLM signed at Naivasha, Kenya signed a permanent cease-fire agreement to end a civil war which started ub 1983.

That cease-fire is part of a global agreement to be finalised in Nairobi Sunday to put a definitive end to the civil war.

The two warring parties have also adopted a detailed plan on the implementation of previous peace agreements.
