UN proposes implementing Nivasha accord to resolve Darfur crisis
KHARTOUM, Jan 7, 2005 (KUNA) — The United Nations presented in a meeting with the Sudanese government Friday a proposal to implement Nivasha peace protocol with the Sudanese Popular Liberation Movement (SPLM), led by John Garang.
UN Secretary General’s Special envoy for Sudan Jan Bronk said in a statement, the negotiations held in the Kenyan capital of Nivasha should mirror the advantages of the final peace accord, pointing out that the UN quoted the same proposal to Darfur’s rebels.
Bronk said the participants discussed the last meeting by the ceasefire joint committee in Darfur held in Njamina and the latest developments in the region.
He added, the UN asked to stop military action for three days to ease the vaccination campaign to fight the poliomyelitis disease, between January 10 and 12.
Bronk denied that the southeast Asian disaster would impede the international community’s aid to victims of war in Sudan.
He said he would submit his regular report to the UN Security Council by end of January to support the peace in Sudan.
Meanwhile, Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismail said he has presented an explanation memorandum to the meeting on the peace accord to be signed on Sunday in Kenya.
Ismail praised the UN delegation and the African Union for their assistance in the peace process in Sudan.
He announced his country’s commitment to respond to the ceasefire’s implementation that secures interests of the Sudanese citizens.
