US insists on Sudan genocide claims
London, Feb 2, 2005 (BBC) – The United States is standing by its claim that Sudan is committing genocide in the Darfur region, despite a United Nations report which stops short of using the term.
Washington is calling for the UN to set up a special court to try those accused of war crimes in the conflict in Sudan.
It also urged the UN Security Council to consider imposing sanctions on Sudan.
The UN’s report called for the conflict in Darfur to be referred to the International Criminal Court – a move which the US opposes.
More than 70,000 people have been killed in the two-year conflict and 2 million have fled their homes.
