Eritrean opposition faction praises peace agreement in Sudan
KHARTOUM, Feb 5, 2005 (SUNA) — The opposition Eritrean People’s Movement has hailed the peace agreement between Sudan government and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and regarded it as a historic accomplishment which will boost the peace and stability in Sudan and the region.
In a press conference at Sudan News Agency (SUNA) Saturday, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Eritrean People’s Movement, ambassador Abdalla Adam, said the signing of the Sudanese peace agreement reflected the government seriousness and persistence to realize stability, peace and unity.
He indicated that Sudan’s peace agreement provides a model for solution of all disputes in the region and the African continent.
Abdalla has criticized the policy of the Eritrean regime toward the neighbouring countries, describing this policy as aggressive, and depends on instigation of conflicts and a climate of instability at all the countries at the region.
He said that the Eritrean regime of Assais Afworki has remained to be hostile toward Sudan, planning to undermine its security and stability, intervening in Sudan’s internal affairs and supporting to the rebel movements in Darfur. He did not rule out the involvement of the Eritrean regime in the recent incidents in Port Sudan city.
Adam said that no breakthrough is expected in Eritrea’s relations with the neighbouring countries, adding that the Eritrean regime’s foreign relation’s policy was a reflection to the internal policy. He said that the internal policies of the Eritrean regime are based on suppression, repression, detention and killing.
Eritrea is currently living in a condition similar to a crisis under the absence of the state of institutions and the requirement of the modern state, he said.
He stressed that the Eritrean regime is suffering from isolation and boycott due to its obtrusive policies, violations of human rights and refuse to adopt a democratic model which meets the aspirations of the Eritrean people.
Meanwhile, Adam said that Eritrean, which achieved its independence late and after a fierce struggle, should have enhanced its relations with the neighbouring countries and to attract support from all countries, but Afworki’s hostile policies has led Eritrea to an abyss of backwardness, poverty and abuse of human right.
He viewed that the Eritrean opposition factions shall adopt a united national programme for realizing peace and stability, democracy and removing the dictatorial regime.
He said that all the Eritrean opposition factions should unite their political message and to abide by common political and diplomatic work, with the aim to isolate the existing regime regionally and internationally, and to put pressure on it so as to relinquish power or stick to dialogue with the others. Adam stressed that all the Eritrean opposition factions shall set up mechanism for joint work to realize their goals.
