Totalitarianism should be abandoned: Sudanese FM

KHARTOUM, July 26 (AFP) — Sudan should abandon its totalitarian rule and pursue political pluralism that can accommodate Sudanese people of all faiths and ethnic groupings, the Sudanese Foreign Minister said Saturday.

“The Sudan should part with totalitarian regimes for good and adopt a rational pluralism that is free of past shortcomings,” said Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismail.

Speaking at the opening session of a three-day symposium on peace and unity in Sudan, organised by Sudanese and Arab studies and research centres, the minister added: “Peace is certainly coming up, God willing, despite the difficulties, which will certainly be swept away by the strong desire of the Sudanese people for peace.

He added: “While it is complementary to peace, national unity is based on political pluralism in the context of which the Sudanese people of religious, ethnic and cultural diversities can coexist.”

As Sudan is a country of diverse ethnicities and faiths, its peace and unity should be based on “equitable sharing of resources and power,” said Dr. Ismail.
