Sudan wants protection of Sudanese citizens in Uganda after kidnap

KHARTOUM, July 27, 2003 (dpa) — The Sudanese Foreign Ministry has summoned the Ugandan Charge d’Affairs and handed him an official letter on protection of Sudanese nationals living in Uganda following reports that relatives of a Sudanese diplomat there have been kidnapped, the foreign ministry said Sunday.

In a statement Mutrif Sadiq, under-secretary at the foreign ministry identified the two disappeared persons as relatives of Yusif Ngor, a diplomat at the Sudanese Embassy in Kampala, adding that Ugandan police were investigating the matter.

Sadiq noted that they were in Uganda on a family visit to see Ngor, a Southern Sudanese from the Northern Upper Nile area.

Meanwhile Sunday the official daily newspaper Al Anbaa alleged that they had been kidnapped by the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA).

Sudan’s Ambassador to Uganda, Surajjudin Ahmed Yusif was also quoted by the state run news agency SUNA as saying the two family members had been abducted by members of the SPLA.
