SLA/M statement on N’djamena Meeting on Darfur

Sudan Liberation Army/Movement (SLA/M)

Press Release

Asmara, February 2005

The Sudan Liberation Movement (SLA/M) would like to state its position regarding the meeting of the Joint Commission and the mini-summit scheduled to discuss Darfur problem.

1- As a member of the Joint Commission the SLA/M will attend the meeting and as its high level leaders are engaged in other pertinent issues, will be represented by our representative to the Commission

2- While we welcome all the efforts geared towards strengthening the implementation of the ceasefire Agreements on Darfur, such as the current proposed high level meeting, we would like to state the fact that the Government of the Sudan (GOS) has neither respected nor committed itself to any agreement. In this regard we are in the opinion that the Commission’s mechanism should be strengthened by way of adding other more effective and credible parties. Thus the SLA/M suggests the inclusion of the UN the European Union (EU) and the USA.

3- Regarding the mini-summit on Darfur, we call on the Summit to:

a) Put maximum pressure on the GOS to withdraw its troops from the areas occupied after the 8th December, stop the aril bombardments, and stick to other commitments as required by the Commission which would create an enabling environment for the continuation of the political talks in the nearest future.

b) To resolve in supporting Abuja as a credible venue for the talks.
